Avec Les Confessions, le moi fait son apparition dans la philosophie, la littérature et la spiritualité occidentales : dans une confession qui est tout à la fois aveu, louange et profession de foi, Augustin fait l'expérience de l'intériorité. Dans le livre X, il refait le parcours de sa conversion, intellectuelle (livre VII) puis morale (livre VIII) : un mouvement théorétique (qui suis-je ? est suivi par un examen de conscience (suis-je pécheur ?). Mais l'introspection ne se réduit pas à la quête de soi d'un individu désireux de s'appréhender dans son unicité et sa subjectivité : c'est bel et bien une quête de Dieu, au cours de laquelle Augustin gravit l'échelle des facultés de son moi (âme, esprit, mémoire) jusqu'à la trace que Dieu a laissée en lui, l'amour naturel qui le porte vers Dieu. Derrière les énigmes du moi se profilent les mystères de la foi.
