The Mucuna pruriens, popularly known as velvet bean or Alkushi, is a plant traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine and belongs to the legume family. The seeds of Mucuna pruriens is a natural source of the amino acid L-3, 4-dihydroxy phenyl alanine (L-DOPA), which is a direct precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine, an important brain chemical involved in mood, sexuality and movement.
Furthermore, seeds also contain other compounds, such as glutathione, lecithin, gallic acid and beta-sitosterol.
It is one of the most popular Indian plants, although their demand increased in international markets since the discovery of L-3, 4-dihydroxy phenyl alanine (L-DOPA) in its seeds, as this compound is used in disease Parkinson.
This plant contains many alkaloids that act deeply about the human nervous system.
