Kalmegh is also known as the 'Bitter King'. This plant is known for its very bitter taste. In Ayurveda, this plant is often prescribed as an antibiotic especially for respiratory diseases. Kalmegh stimulates the liver to secrete gastric juices. This makes the food better digested and stimulates the appetite. It counteracts a difficult digestion and reduces stomach acid. In addition, it is carminative and has a strong effect against bloating. Kalmegh also works well for diarrhea. A scientific study shows that the plant is just as effective as loperamide, a synthetic drug for diarrhoea. Kalmegh acts as a tonic.

Indication:

Respiratory infections, strep throat, colds, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, dysentery caused by bacteria, enteritis or intestinal inflammation

Contraindication:

Do not use during pregnancy and if you want to become pregnant

Dosage:

Take 1 teaspoon twice a day with warm water before a meal

Take 2 capsules twice a day with warm water before a meal

In case of digestive problems it is after the meal

Children half dose

In case of acute infections, increase the dose to 3 caps 2 times a day

Kalmegh can be used in combination with:

- Swasani for stronger airways

- Ashwagandha for general weakness

- Guduchi in acute diarrhoea
