This is a divine antique French ciel de lit / bed couronne or bed canopy dating from the late 1800's, early 1900's.

It would have been hung above a bed to create a decorative centre piece from which to hang drapes.

It has an almost circular wooden frame. To the front of the frame is a fabulous bow and laurel leaf crest. The ribbon tails entwine in the laurel leaf swags which trail to either side. The crest is cast in exquisite detail and the gilding has a fabulous antique hue while still remaining lustrous. The frame is painted.

In recent years the canopy of the frame has been covered in a delightful pink toile and the top of the frame in a light grey cotton textile.

Within the frame is the original wire from which the drapes were hung. This could be used again or it could be removed and the drapes stapled directly onto the wood.

There are 2 fixtures on the back of the ciel de lit to fix it to a wall. On the front of the ciel de lit is a loop from which it can be supported by a chain.

The ciel de lit is sturdy. It measures  :- W 57  cm (22.5 inches) x D 57 cm (22.5 inches) x H 11.5 cm (4.5 inches).

This is a divine bed canopy to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir and another fabulous antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
