B910 - SOLD

This is an absolutely beautiful antique French bénitier or holy water stoup dating from the early 1900's. It is made from bisque and is painted in lovely colour and detail. It would be perfect for hanging on a wall as part of a period display or religious collection.

A divine image of Mary stands on a rock above a gorgeous pink shell which acts as the bowl for the holy water. On the shell is the name 'LOURDES' in gilded letters and the bènitier would probably have been bought as a souvenir during a pilgrimage there.

Mary is beautifully attired in a flowing white gown with a blue sash. She has gilded highlights to her mantle, the neck of her gown, her rosary and feet.

Her face is painted in exquisite detail. She has stunning blue eyes, there is a pink blush to her cheeks and she has rosebud lips. Her hands are held in prayer and are also wonderfully detailed.

The back of the bénitier has two holes at the top for threading with a piece of  ribbon for hanging on a wall.

The bénitier is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.

It measures 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) high x 8 cm (3 inches) wide x 5 cm (2 inches) deep.

A beautiful bénitier to display and enjoy and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
