B901 - SOLD

This is an exquisite antique French icon dating from the 1800's. It is made from brass and porcelain and is of superb quality. It is very decorative and architectural.

The exterior of the icon resembles a piece of church architecture. There is a central spire with a cross and to either side a pillar. There is a central arch above which is a cherub's head. The arch has elaborate doors which open to reveal the most gorgeous hand painted icon of Mary, Jesus and an angel. They are beautifully depicted in glorious colour and detail.

Mary clasps her child to her. She is dressed in a green plaid shawl and has a grey plaid mantle. Her skirts are a rich midnight blue against which the vibrant yellow of  the Holy Child's attire contrasts beautifully. Behind them a rosy cheeked angel with a gilded halo and cross looks on adoringly.

The detail on the icon is stunning - even the inside of the doors are decorated with winged angels playing a fanfare on horns.

The icon stands on a brass back rest. It is in good condition. The hinges on the doors work perfectly.

It measures :- 16 cm (6.25 inches) high x 7 cm (2.75 inches) wide x 8 cm (3.25 inches) deep when standing.

This is a fabulous religious piece to display and use and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
