This is a divine antique French bénitier / icon dating from the 1800's. It is made from brass and is of superb quality. It is very decorative and architectural.

At the top is a central three dimensional crucifix and to either side a spire. Beneath these is an arch with 2 doors. The doors open by a tiny little brass knob to reveal the most gorgeous porcelain icon of Mary. She is beautifully depicted in glorious colour and detail. Her hands are clasped and her face serene. She wears vestments in stunning shades of yellow, red and blue.

Beneath the icon is the holy water stoop, also decorative and held within the ecclesiastical shape of the back plate. The detail on the icon is stunning - even the insides of the doors are decorated. The hinges are of wonderful quality and close smoothly.

The back of the icon is also beautiful and is proof of it's quality. It is covered in silk in a gorgeous shade of turquoise, now worn from the passage of time. The remnants of the label of the Paris shop from which the icon was originally purchased can still be seen. There is a loop for hanging the icon on a wall.

This gorgeous bénitier / icon measures 17.75 cm (7 inches) high x 10 cm (4 inches) wide x 4 cm (1.5 inches) deep. There is a little brass loop on the back for hanging on a wall.

This is a fabulous religious piece to use, or just enjoy for it's quality and beauty and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
