This is a divine antique French wooden posting box dating from the 1800's.

It came from the Hôtel De La Cloche D'Or and would have contained Madeleine cakes, the traditional small cake from Commercy, a commune of the Lorraine region in northeastern France.

An address label would have been attached directly to the box and the Madeleines would have been posted in the box, hence it's sturdy nature. Possibly they would have been sent by guests of the hotel to their friends as souvenir gifts.

The box is oval in shape and is of Shaker style with a lift off lid. The label on the lid is original to the box and shows the medals and awards that the hotel had won for their Madeleines.

The box measures :- 28 cm (11 inches) wide x 14.5 cm (5.75 inches) deep x 10 cm (4 inches) high.

This charming box is an interesting and decorative addition to any vintage display and would be divine for keepsakes.
