B1992 - Fantastic Antique French Purple Velvet Jewel Box / Vanity Case & Accessories C 1900

This is a fantastic antique French vanity box dating from about 1900 with just about everything going for it!

The exterior of the box is covered in a fabulous thick pile silk velvet in a sumptuous shade of purple. This has timeworn to perfection from years of use. At the back of the box where there is least wear the quality and colour of the textile can really be appreciated.

On the top of the lid of the box is a padded leather panel with a charming hand painted scene of two playful children - one trying to pull another from a chair from which she refuses to be budged! The leather is very tactile. It is has some scuffs but a little wax would soon remove these if required.

The box has a decorative brass escutcheon and a darling little key which works the lock perfectly.

As one lifts the lid to the box a sumptuous interior in magenta silk and the fabulous purple velvet is revealed. On a lift out tray is an array of useful accessories. There is a cuticle remover with a nail file, a lace puller, a pair of glove stretchers (working) a tiny brush with real bristles (some now gone) two tiny little pots with screw tops and a nail buffer.

To either side of the tray are two crystal bottles with their original ground glass stoppers. The bottles are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips.

Beneath the lift out tray is a compartment lined with ruched silk and to the front of the box is a long compartment which may have been for gloves. There is a silk loop in this compartment suggesting that there may have once been an implement here but which has now long gone. Apart from this the vanity box is complete.

In the centre of the underside of the lid is a mirror with thick plate.

The box and it's hinges are sturdy. The silk stays to hold the lid in place when open have perished over the years but these could be replaced if required.

This gorgeous timeworn vanity box would add faded grandeur to a château chic boudoir.

It measures :- 37 cm (14.5 inches) wide x 25 cm (9.75 inches) deep x 10 cm (4 inches) high.
