B1325 - SOLD

This is a superb antique French bénitier dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. It is an exceptional example of it's type and is very decorative and architectural.

It is made of wood in the shape of the crucifix and is covered in the most gorgeous sumptuous, deep pile green silk velvet. In the centre of this is Jesus on the cross, made in spelter and gilded. The cross is decorated with leaves and berries tinted with green and red. The tips of the cross are highly decorative with extensive scrollwork and above Jesus are the letters INRI. Below the cross is the holy water stoop.

The gilding on the spelter has mellowed over the years to perfection. The sumptuous silk velvet is in excellent condition with a just a few areas of very minor wear.

There is a fitting on the back (stamped 'PARIS') which has a ring for hanging the bénitier on a wall.

The bénitier measures :- 45 cm (17.5 inches) high x 27 cm (10.5 inches) wide x 7 cm (2.75 inches) deep.

This beautiful bénitier is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French religious & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
