This is an exquisite antique French gilded gesso on wood jewel / keepsake box dating from the 19th Century. It is truly magnificent and to receive it as a gift must surely be proof of the giver's sentiment!

The whole of the box is skillfully decorated with the most gorgeous gilded gesso in a beautiful golden hue with red bole highlights.

The lid has a sublime central vignette of divine roses beautifully moulded to perfection. Within each corner is a small rose vignette and there is beading to the perimeter.

The sides of the box are decorated with little flowers and tendrils and further moulding. The box sits on 4 magnificent feet, one to each corner. They are decorated with elaborate acanthus leaf swirls.

The lid lifts up on 2 piano hinges to reveal a sumptuous interior lined with deep pile plumptious velvet in the most gorgeous shade of raspberry pink.

The box has a lock and key. The key turns in the lock to secure it shut but the key does not come out.

The box is sturdy and is in excellent antique condition. There are just two minor nibbles to the gesso on the lid (please see photos).

It measures :- 28 cm (11 inches) wide x 21 cm (8.25 inches) deep x 15 cm (6 inches) high.

This truly exceptional antique jewellery box would grace the grandest boudoir. It is from a carefully selected collection of antique French decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'!
