This is an amazing antique French repoussé on wood cushion mirror dating from the mid 1800's. It is a very atmospheric piece and would certainly add a château chic finishing touch to an interior.
It is in the Rococo style and is very decorative. The crest has a mirrored background overlain with a gorgeous repoussé urn filled with fruit, and with acanthus leaf swirls and flowers to either side & below.
Below the crest is the actual cushion mirror. There is a central elongated hexagonal bevelled glass plate surrounded by 8 smaller mirrored panels. These are held in place by an outer and an inner decorative repoussé frame joined by 8 beautiful repoussé oak leaves each with 3 with little acorns. The effect is fabulous.
The mirror and it's frame are sturdy. It is a very atmospheric piece and has acquired character over the last 150 years but nothing to take away it's looks or strength. There are some dents to the repoussé and some areas where the repoussé has chipped off to reveal the wood below. At the very base of the mirror a section of the metal has come off to reveal the putty which is still holding the mirror plate securely in place. Please see photos.
The mirror plates are generally clear with just a few age spots. The panel at the very base has more foxing than the others.
The mirror measures :- 71.5 cm (28.25 inches) high x 42.5 cm (16.75 inches) wide.
A beautiful mirror for a special niche. It is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'!
