This is an absolutely gorgeous antique French bénitier or holy water stoup dating from the 19th Century. It is made from repoussé metal in wonderful detail. It would be perfect for hanging on a wall as part of a period display or religious collection.

The repoussé is worked in a cross shape and has a central medallion with the image of Jesus Christ. The cross is pierced and is formed from scrolls and curls and shell shapes. The medallion has beautiful filigree work to the top and bottom. The effect is truly beautiful.

The bowl for the holy water has a lovely flower garland rim and the Fleur De Lys on the underside makes a sublime finishing touch.

The silvering on the repoussé has mellowed over the years to perfection. It has patinated to a beautiful soft 2 tone silver and gold effect.

On the back of the bénitier is a little metal loop for hanging on a wall.

The bénitier is in sturdy condition with just a few minor dents to the bowl which just adds character to this divine old piece.

It measures 19 cm (7.5 inches) high x 11.75 cm (4.5 inches) wide.
